Neurosis or the new cool?

[Contemporary man] is blind to the fact that, with all his rationality and efficiency, he is possessed by "powers" that are beyond his control. His gods and demons have not disappeared at all; they have merely got new names. They keep him on the run with restlessness, vague apprehensions, psychological complications, an insatiable need for pills, alcohol, tobacco, food – and, above all, a large array of neuroses. (Jung, 1964:82).

sometimes I wonder, how far does one have to go to be cool? I have seen people go all the way to the bottom of the pit, people I care about, it disappoints and hurts me. When is one supposed to admit ' that is stupid' and draw the line? Having grown  up in most countries in East and Southern Africa, I have made all kinds of friends, spoken many languages, but they experiances all have something in common.

No matter where I am there will aways be cliques, groups, people always striving to be like others. What happened to being 'you'  When does it start, this unrealistic feeding of the ego? When do we stop being who we are? wanting what we only need? I shudder for today's generation, we work harder, we achieve earlier, we succeed faster, but we throw it all away in the fast lanes of the new cosmopolitans.
