Pambazuka - MRG deeply disappointed by Arusha Court land rights judgment against Loliondo Maasai
Another land grab injustice against our fellow Maasai in Arusha in the Loliondo area. It does not make sense how a court would not take cognizance of the fact that these people were never consulted in the first instance when the land was sold over 20 years ago. The land was never used for the purpose for which it was purchased and after twenty years of reasonable expectation that the land belonged to the community, the court on the 28th of this October in Arusha made a ruling to the detriment of the Maasai community. They are a breed so rare and so representational of what we as original mankind are, with such special attachment to their land and land being a form of cultural survival for them and their livestock. The Tanzanian government must do something about this, and do it soon.
